Chapter 7

The marigold glow brought traders all week. It also brought a stranger Mara did not know. He came alone at dusk, no cart, no goods. He climbed the hidden path like a man who had walked it before. Mara watched from the ridge and felt her stomach drop. The beacon had no lock. Anyone who saw it could follow it in. A trader looked like a scout. A scout looked like a trader. She had no way to tell them apart. Marigold met her at the wall. "Twelve arrived today. Any of them could be Guild." She stated it plain. "We can't turn away the real ones to catch the false ones. That defeats the whole point." "Then we test them," Mara said. "Without them knowing." She sent for Saraphillia. The red-haired woman came down from her mountain fortress that night, hood up, robes lined in gold. People mixed her up with her twin often, and the Guild paid coin for red hair like hers. Yet she walked into danger without slowing. She set a small box on the stones and lifted the lid. A glowing fox stepped out, half beast, half something wiser. "She reads intent," Saraphillia said. "She likes people who mean no harm. She avoids the rest." Beside the fox perched a crow with butterfly wings, patterned in strange colors. "And this one shows what a person did," Saraphillia added. "Recent things. Hidden things." Mara made her plan. Each newcomer would pass the glowing fox at the road's mouth, believing it a village charm. The fox would greet honest traders and shrink from liars. The sentinel bird would confirm the doubtful ones. Simple. Quiet. No one questioned. The stranger came through first. The fox backed away, ears flat, and would not touch him. The sentinel spread its wings. In its patterns Mara saw the man three nights past, pressing his fingers to a village door where children slept. Not Guild. Something worse. A clipped voice spoke from the dark. "That's my mark." Fennrick Vex stepped into the light. The Guild thought him a drunk tracker with a scarred eye. Marigold knew better. He had lied to the Guild once to protect her, and warned her of this very hunter. "He leaves three drags on doors. I've been chasing him." His eyes fixed on the stranger. "He's not here for trade." The stranger ran. Fennrick was faster. He caught the man at the wall and pinned him. The fox stood guard. The sentinel circled overhead. By dawn they had their answer. The beacon worked as a filter now. The fox sorted honest from false. The bird proved the rest. No informant could pass unseen again. But the caught man was no Guild spy. He was the door-marker Fennrick hunted. And he had followed the marigold glow straight to where the children now sheltered.
