Chapter 1

Maren Thornwell had asked the same question for three days, and every elder in the village turned away. She stood in the muddy lane between the stone houses, holding a basket of soft-leaved herbs she was supposed to be gathering. "A sleeping god hides us," old Gareth had muttered last night, then clamped his mouth shut when she leaned closer. Now no one would say more. Maren wanted the truth. Her village sat alone in the world, unmarked on any trader's map, and she meant to learn why. She tried the weaver first. The woman shook her head and shut her door. She tried the miller. He handed her back her basket and told her to mind her chores. Every closed face made the mystery heavier. If the elders knew a god kept the village hidden, they had decided she was too young to be told. A small animal broke the silence. It darted from behind a rain barrel, orange and cream, with a wide feathered tail and bright blue eyes. Maren had never seen its kind. It snatched a sprig from her basket, then trotted off, glancing back as if it wanted her to follow. Maren followed. The creature led her past the last house, down a footpath she rarely used. It stopped at the edge of a clearing she had walked by a hundred times without really looking. There stood the old shrine. She knew the shrine held prayers to gods long forgotten. Carved wolves guarded its steps. Runes ran across the worn stone door, and moss filled their grooves. The little animal sat on the top step and waited. Maren climbed toward it. Up close, she saw the central slab was not a wall but a door, set into the shrine's heart. Someone had scrubbed part of it clean recently. Fresh candle wax pooled at its base. The elders came here. They tended this place in secret. She pressed her hand to the cold stone. It hummed. A slow, deep pulse moved through her palm, like a heartbeat far below the earth. She jerked back, then touched it again to be sure. The hum came steady, patient, alive. Something slept beneath the shrine. The elders had not lied. A branch snapped behind her. Maren spun. Old Gareth stood at the clearing's edge, his face gray. "You should not be here," he said. His voice shook. "You've woken nothing. But it heard you now. It knows a Thornwell touched the door." Maren's heart pounded. "Then tell me what it is." Gareth looked at the humming stone, then at her. "Too late for silence," he said. "Come. There are things your mother should have told you before she died." Maren left the shrine with the small animal at her heels. She had chased a rumor for three days. Now she had a heartbeat under the ground, a keeper who feared her name, and a promise of answers she was not sure she wanted.
