Chapter 2

Old Gareth told her the elders would never speak the sleeping god's name on her word alone. "You felt a hum," he said. "A hum is not proof. Bring them something they can hold." So Maren went back to the shrine at dusk, the feathered animal trotting ahead of her. She needed evidence. Without it, every door in the village stayed shut. The shrine crouched in the clearing, carved wolves watching the steps. Maren climbed to the humming stone door. This time she did not touch it. She searched the base instead, digging through wet leaves and old candle wax. Her fingers scraped stone that shifted. She pried up a broken slab and found a flat tablet beneath it, half the size of the door, its face crowded with worn letters. Gold still clung to the deepest grooves. She could not read the script, but she knew a village elder could. Proof, she thought. She lifted the tablet from its hollow. The hum stopped. The silence was worse than the sound. The little animal flattened its ears and bolted. Cold light bled from the cracks in the door. Then the light stepped out and stood on the altar in the shape of a small figure, its stone face split with glowing blue veins. Its eyes burned like two coals. "You bled here," it said. Its voice was flat and low. "Old blood. A name older than yours." Maren's arms locked around the tablet. "Who are you?" "Vel'Tharis." It tilted its cracked head. "I ruled from the shelf to the salt water. Then I heard a wrong sound and lay down." Her heart slammed. She had a name now. Not a hum, not a rumor. A god standing three steps away, speaking it plainly. "You woke me," Vel'Tharis said. "That is done." It looked at the tablet in her hands. "You want proof. You hold it." "The elders keep you secret," Maren said. "They keep everyone here trapped." "Not I." The glowing eyes narrowed. "Something sang me under. It sings your village still. Find it." Then the god was gone, folded back into the dark behind the door. But the door stayed dark. No hum returned. The wax at its base had gone gray and cold. Maren stood alone with the tablet against her chest. She had her proof, and more. She had the sleeping god's own name from its own mouth. But the shrine was silent now, and she understood what that meant. Whatever the elders had tended here, whatever kept the village hidden, she had just pulled it loose. She walked back toward the houses with the heavy stone in her arms. The elders could no longer wave her off. She would set the tablet on the table and make them say the name Vel'Tharis aloud. What they said next, and what the silence at the shrine would bring, she did not yet know.
