Chapter 2

Mariel refreshed the poll results and watched the numbers climb. The video was live, and her viewers were already voting on which family members would enter the story next. She had set it up carefully: one family member for the hero's side, one for the villain's. The winner for the good side was cookies-and-pink19. Mariel opened the character creator and built a three-year-old girl with salt and pepper hair tied up with a bright pink bow. She dressed her in a tiger tee and ripped jeans, then added the biggest smile the editor would allow. She placed a vanilla cupcake with pink frosting in the character's hands and saved the file. When she opened the game map, she positioned the little sister near a garden statue — a black heart cracked down the middle, marking the border between hero territory and villain territory. The good side got the half surrounded by flowers. The bad side's winner was Meadow-darkness29. Mariel paused. She had expected someone younger, someone easier to control. Instead, the votes had chosen a male cousin. She built him older, sharp-featured, dressed in a dark purple suit with a high collar. She gave him pale skin and red eyes, then added a wine bottle to his hand. When she placed him on the map, she set him on the opposite side of the cracked heart statue, in a patch of dead grass and shadows. He looked like he belonged there. Mariel exported both characters and opened her editing timeline. She wanted to announce the new family members with a reveal graphic, something that would make her viewers feel like they had shaped the story. But when she tried to write the script, she stopped. The little sister felt safe, predictable. The cousin felt like a variable she had not planned for. She touched the ribbon in her hair and stared at the two character portraits side by side. Her viewers had given her exactly what she asked for. Now she had to prove she could make it work.
