Chapter 14

The handler was gone, but Nyx was gone too, and so was Saraphillia. Marigold stood at the signal station and counted what she had left. The ledger had won her the fight. Now she opened the route book Mara kept hidden under the floor and found nothing she could read. The two people who ran the hidden roads had vanished the same week. Saraphillia had guided traders in secret for months. Nyx had hidden the paths from the Guild with her tricks. Without them, the next caravan would arrive and have no one to bring it through. Mara climbed up from the sunken road, her green cloak wet at the hem. She dropped a tied bundle of markers on the table. "Three carts are coming tomorrow night," she said. "They'll reach the bend and wait for a signal that isn't coming." "Then we send one," Marigold said. "Show me how the charm beacon works." "Saraphillia set it. Nyx kept it hidden from scouts." Mara's voice stayed flat. "I moved goods. I never touched the magic. You think I watched over their shoulders?" Marigold felt the floor tilt under her. She had traded both of them away herself. She had made every choice that left this room empty. The giant cat pushed through the arched door. It had waited at the trail for Nyx and come back alone each night. Now it carried something in its jaws and dropped it at Marigold's feet. A small charm, violet light curled inside the glass, a silver fox mask etched on its face. Nyx's trickster charm. The cat had dug it from wherever Nyx last stood. Fennrick slipped in behind the cat, small and soft-eared, no cloak now. He sniffed the charm and his ears flattened. "She left it on purpose," he said. "That's a false-trail charm. Lays a scent the Guild hounds chase the wrong way. She knew she wasn't coming back." Marigold picked it up. The light moved like it was alive. "Can you work it?" "I can lay the trail. I've done it before." He looked at the route book, useless in her hands. "But a charm doesn't know the roads. Only Saraphillia did." Then Marigold saw it plain. She could not replace them. She stopped trying. "We don't hide the roads anymore," she said. "We teach them. Every trader who comes through learns the next stretch and carries it forward. No single person holds the whole route again." Mara was quiet a moment. "If one gets caught, they only give up one piece." "And no one I lose takes the whole network with them." They met the three carts at the bend the next night. Fennrick laid the false trail wide. Marigold walked each driver through their stretch and had them walk it back to her. By dawn the carts were gone, and four people knew the road instead of one. The network would not die with its keepers. But now strangers held its secrets, and Marigold no longer chose who carried them.
