Chapter 7

Marigold came down from the mountain before dawn. Fennrick's warning sat in her chest like a stone. Someone had marked a door where children slept. She reached the row of small homes near the well. On the third door she found three slow drags in the wood. Fresh. She pressed her thumb to them. The children inside still breathed easy. She did not know who had done it. She only knew that if she guessed wrong, and named a neighbor, the village would break. She gathered no crowd. Instead she went to the old wooden watchtower at the village edge. Frost coated its carved beams. From there she could see every path and every door. She meant to watch, not accuse. She would rather sit blind all night than point a finger at the wrong person. Saraphillia found her there at midday. Marigold's ally from the mountain fortress climbed the tower steps, green robes dragging, red hair glowing faint in the gray light. She kept broken stories in boxes and rarely wasted words. She set a small dark bird on the rail. It had a crow's body and butterfly wings marked with spirals. Its eye tracked Marigold. "It saw the door made," Saraphillia said. Marigold leaned close. "Then it saw the mark left. Can it show me who?" "It shows shapes. Not names." Saraphillia touched the bird's wing. "Ask it plain." Marigold asked. The sentinel spread its wings. In their spirals a picture moved: a hooded figure, tall, dragging three fingers down wood. The hair beneath the hood glowed red. Marigold's breath caught. Red hair. Like Saraphillia's. Like the twin who lived in the village below and shared her face. "That's not you," Marigold said carefully. "No." Saraphillia's jaw tightened. "My sister hoards names. She marks doors now too." Marigold saw the trap close. If she named the red-haired woman, half the village would think of Saraphillia. The sisters shared everything but intent. Accuse one, and she might strike an ally. Say nothing, and children stayed in danger. She chose to be wrong out loud rather than hide. She called the villagers to the well at dusk. She did not name a person. She named the mark. She held up a wing image the sentinel had burned into a scrap of cloth. "Someone with red hair marked that door," she said. "I have red-haired friends I trust with my life. So I will not guess. I will guard." The crowd murmured but did not turn on each other. Saraphillia stepped beside her, showing her own face plainly, letting them compare. Trust held. Then a child pointed past the well. The red-haired figure from the vision stood at the tree line, watching. Not Saraphillia. Her twin. She turned and ran toward the sunken road, toward the traders Marigold hid. Marigold had kept her village whole. But the marker now fled straight toward everyone she had sworn to protect.
