Chapter 8

Marigold ran after the fleeing figure. Saraphillia's twin darted toward the sunken road, where hidden traders sheltered behind the cliff walls. If she reached them, she could mark every door and sell the names to the Guild. Marigold's boots slipped on frost. The gap widened. She would not catch her by running. Saraphillia caught Marigold's arm. "You can't tell us apart. Neither can the traders." Her voice stayed flat. "If you shout, they'll hide from me too." She was right. Both sisters shared the same glowing red hair. Naming the wrong one meant driving away the ally beside her. Marigold needed proof, not a guess. A small cat-like creature slid from the brush. She stretched into a girl with pale purple hair and cat ears. This was Nyx, the shapeshifter who borrowed faces from anyone without being noticed. She had helped Marigold fool Guild hounds before. Now she looked tired. "I can copy a face," Nyx said. "But I need a thread of her hair." Marigold saw the trap in it. Copy the wrong sister and she'd expose Saraphillia instead. Then she remembered the charm Nyx carried, a small disc with two trickster faces blurred together. "You don't copy her," Marigold said. "You become the traders' fear. Show her what she's really doing." Nyx pressed the charm to her chest. She ran ahead and stopped in the twin's path. Then she shifted into the twin's own face, freckle for freckle, red hair glowing. The fleeing woman froze, staring at herself. Nyx spoke in the twin's voice. "You marked the children's door. Say it. Say it out loud." The twin's mouth twisted. "They pay for names. I take names." The words carried across the clearing. Villagers who had followed heard them plain. So did Marigold. The confession was clear, and it came from the twin, not Saraphillia standing at Marigold's side in green robes. Mara Thornshield stepped from the trees behind the twin, blocking the sunken road. She ran the covert trade network with Marigold and guarded its doors like her own. "The road's shut," Mara said. "You don't reach my traders." She did not raise her voice. She did not need to. The twin turned to run the other way. Villagers closed the gap. She had no path left. Marigold reached her at last and took her wrists. "You're the one," Marigold said. "Not her. You." No one doubted it now. The confession had named her. The village had heard. Marigold sheltered the true threat no longer. She locked the twin in the signal station under Mara's watch. The children slept safe. But the twin had already sold names to a Guild handler, and that handler now knew a marked trader lived among Marigold's people. The threat had a face. It also had a buyer, and the buyer was still coming.
