Marina stood at the edge of the property with mud on her boots and a phone number in her pocket she wasn't ready to call yet. The land was perfect — five acres with open sky, close to water, far enough from traffic that stressed animals could actually heal. She'd walked it twice already, once at dawn and once at dusk, watching how the light moved across it. She could see exactly where the flight pens would go, where she'd build the rehab shelter, where the dock could extend for water rescues. But the fence line was already marked with orange stakes, and the demolition permit was stapled to a post near the road. Someone with more money and fewer doubts had claimed it first. The teardown started at sunrise. She found the cavern on her third walk, tucked into the hillside where vines hung like curtains over the entrance. Inside, the air stayed cool even in afternoon heat, and the stone walls would buffer sound and wind. Birds could roost in the natural shelves. Injured animals could retreat into darkness when they needed it. It was the kind of place you couldn't build if you tried — nature had already done the work. Marina pulled out her phone and dialed the number. The man who answered owned half the permits in the county and all of her late rent from two years ago. She told him what she needed. He told her what it would cost. By the time she hung up, the sun had dropped below the tree line, and she had until dawn to decide if a sanctuary built on borrowed time was worth more than one that never got built at all.
