Marina had six hours left to decide when the knock came. She was at the kitchen table with her phone face-down and a calculator running numbers that wouldn't add up no matter how many times she cleared them. The cavern was real. The offer was real. The terms were real too, and they sat in her chest like swallowed glass. The woman at the door was pale and shaking. She held a fox kit wrapped in a bloody beach towel. Its leg bent wrong. Its breathing came fast and shallow. "The vet clinic's closed," the woman said. "Someone at the market said you help animals. Please." Marina looked at the kit, then at her phone on the table. The creditor's terms meant she could say yes to every animal that showed up at her door. Saying no meant keeping what little control she had left. The fox kit made a sound like broken glass grinding together. Marina opened the door wider. "Bring him to the back," she said, and the decision was made. She'd take the cavern. She'd take the debt. She'd build the sanctuary on borrowed time because the alternative was telling this woman to let the fox die on someone else's porch. By the time she got the kit stable under the heat lamp next to the gull's crate, dawn was two hours closer and the number in her phone was already dialed. When he answered, she didn't let herself hesitate. "I'm in," she said. "I'll take your terms."
