Chapter 11

The bond held now, but the cold halls did not warm. Elara had claimed her place with Maris in the dark chamber. She still walked the stone corridors as a stranger. The swamp-born sirens watched her and said nothing. She had no allies of her own. Maris felt the doubt in the council's silence. He knew a queen with no friends could not rule. So he took her hand one morning and led her out through the town, past the market rows, so she might mingle and find her own place. They walked until Elara stopped. "Crying," she said. She turned toward the sound. Maris followed her to a wall of weathered rock. Its rows held layered openings, soft and green with moss. Inside each hollow rested a siren child. A woman moved among them with a small capped bottle in her hand. She was the one who kept the place. She looked up, saw the land-born queen, and her jaw tightened. "This is the queen," Maris said. He kept his voice even. "She heard the children." The woman did not bow. "We manage," she said. But a child wailed in the far row. Two others fussed, unfed. Maris watched Elara count the empty bottles on the ledge. Three. For a whole wall of hungry young. "You don't manage," Elara said. "You're short on bottles. You're short on hands." She did not soften it. The woman stared, ready to argue, then closed her mouth. "Then help or leave," the woman said. Elara rolled up her sleeves. "Show me which ones haven't eaten." Maris stood back and watched. Elara lifted a crying child from its hollow. She held it against her chest and gave it the bottle. The wailing stopped. She learned each row. She learned each name. She sent for more bottles from the market and did not wait for permission. When one runner refused her, she went herself and carried them back in her own arms. Day after day she returned. The keeper stopped scowling. She began to save the worst-fed children for Elara's hands, because they quieted for her. Other siren women came to help. They spoke to Elara over the rows. They asked her questions. They laughed at her answers. Word moved through the town. The land-born queen fed their young. She knew their children's names before she knew the council's. Maris came at the end of a long day and found Elara asleep against the rock, a child in her lap. Three women worked the rows around her, quiet so she could rest. One nodded to him. Not to the king. To the woman who slept there. Elara had allies now. She had made them herself, hollow by hollow. The council could doubt a stranger. They could not doubt a queen the town had chosen. Maris felt the bond glow steady in his chest. The throne no longer rested on his blood alone. It rested on her.
