Chapter 10

The council sirens came back one by one. They knelt in the throne room and pledged themselves to Maris. The tyrant was gone. The throne was his. But when Maris turned to Elara, he felt the bond stretch thin between them. She stood at the edge of the stone hall, apart from the others. She watched the swamp-born sirens the way a person watches strangers in her own house. "You don't sleep," Maris said. He found her that night in a shadowed chamber, Rath curled against her chest. The dark rock dripped around them. She kept the small pearl he had given her closed in one fist. "I keep waiting for the water to feel like home," she said. "It doesn't. These halls are cold. Their faces are cold. I stood in the arch and I would have died for our son. But I still don't belong here." Maris felt the truth of it in the bond. It flickered, worn from the fight, worn thinner now by her doubt. His power came from this connection. If she stayed a stranger, the bond would fade, and the throne with it. He could not force her to feel at home. He had learned that in the arch, watching her stand where he could not. So he did not argue. He sat beside her on the cold stone. He opened her fist and looked at the pearl in her palm. It shimmered, catching the little light. "When I gave you this, I bound myself to you," he said. "I never told you what it meant. I should have. It means I chose you. Not the throne. You." He closed her hand around it again. "This place is mine by blood. But it is only home if you make it one. So don't try to fit into their halls. Change them." Elara looked at Rath. The boy slept, his moss-green eyes shut, his olive skin pale in the dark. He had grown stronger here. The swamp filled him with power no enemy could cross. "He belongs here," she said. "He's part of both of us." She pressed her hand flat against Maris's chest, over the place where the bond lived. Warmth moved between them. The thin thread pulled tight, then steadied, then glowed. It was not the desperate surge that had once called Malachar. It was quiet and whole. The cold chamber seemed to warm. Maris felt his strength return, full and clean, drawn not from need but from a bond that had finally settled. "I'll change them," Elara said. "This is my home now. I decide that. Not the water." Maris pressed his forehead to hers. Rath stirred between them and did not wake. For the first time, the bond held without strain. The throne was safe. The queen had claimed her place. And in the dark stronghold, Maris felt the last thing he had feared to lose settle into something that would not break.
