Chapter 9

Maris waited in the dark water above the lower arch. Below, Elara stood in the mouth of the worn stone gate. Rath rested against her chest. She held a small dagger in one hand. The council sirens hung back in the shadows, tridents ready. Maris pressed himself flat against the rock and watched. The mate bond still pulsed between them, thin but alive. Through it he felt her heartbeat. She was calm. That calm steadied him. He felt something else too. Raw power moved between mother and child, warm and steady, growing stronger the longer they stood in the swamp. Rath's blood filled the archway like a second wall. Maris flexed his claws. His resolve hardened. He would not let them stand alone. The water shuddered. Malachar came through the deep like a black spear. His midnight hair streamed behind him. His long black eyes fixed on Elara. His clawed fingers spread wide. Behind him swam his men, unbound by the old law, free to pass. Malachar reached the arch first. Maris held his breath. Elara did not run. She lifted Rath higher and stood her ground in the breach. Malachar drove forward. The blood law caught him. An unseen force slammed into his chest and threw him back through the water. He tumbled, snarling, his fangs bared. His forces slowed, confused, watching their king hurled away from a village girl and a child. "He can't touch us," Elara said. Her voice was flat and sure. "Come and try again." Malachar roared and charged the arch a second time. Again the law struck him back. His men began to scatter. Their leader could not lead. The trap had closed. Maris moved. He darted down from the rock, fast as the current. His dark tail swept once and carried him into Malachar's side. His claws found the tyrant's throat before Malachar could turn. Malachar clawed at him, wild, but the blood law had already broken his strength. "You came for my mate," Maris said against his ear. "You found her guarded." He drove his claws deep and twisted. Malachar's black eyes went wide. His body shook once. Then it lost its shape. The tyrant dissolved into pale sea foam that drifted up and scattered in the current. His leaderless forces broke and fled into the swamp. The council sirens surged after them, tridents flashing. The arch was quiet. Maris swam to Elara. She lowered the dagger. Rath blinked up at him, unharmed. Maris pressed his forehead to hers. The bond flickered between them, worn thin from the fight but still holding. "It's done," she said. "He's gone." Maris looked at his son, the wall no enemy could cross. The throne was safe now. But the council had scattered into the dark water after fleeing men, and Maris did not yet know how many would return to kneel.
