Chapter 3

The provisional stamp gave Maya one month. She sat in her barn that night and did the math. A Saturday paycheck and a stack of portrait cash bought food for a while. It did not prove the rescue could run on its own. The council wanted a stream, not a splash. Seventeen animals ate every day, and one job could not feed them all forever. She needed something steady. She grabbed her sketchbook and listed ideas until her hand hurt. A market booth. Boarding pets in the empty garage down the street. Selling her drawings as sticker packs online, small enough to ship, cheap enough to buy again and again. Any single idea felt thin. All three together might hold. But the council wrote the rules, and Maya did not know them. So she called the one councilwoman who had smiled at the shelter during the inspection. Eleanor Hartwell had voted to grant the provisional license. She had lingered by the dog pens longer than the paperwork required, scratching an old retriever behind the ears. Eleanor met her at a coffee shop the next morning. She wore pearls and a tired kindness. She listened to Maya's three plans without interrupting, then set down her cup. "I want you to win this," she said. "But wanting isn't a vote. The rest of the council counts dollars, not good hearts." Maya slid her sketchbook across the table. She showed the sticker designs, the booth layout, the boarding rates. "Three streams," she said. "If one dries up, the others hold." Eleanor studied the pages a long time. Her finger tapped the sticker sheet. "This one," she said. "Online sales prove monthly income. The council can read a ledger. But you need a real record, not a guess. Numbers on paper, month after month." She looked up. "Start now. Bring me one full month of sales by the deadline. I'll stand for you at the vote." Maya's chest tightened. "The deadline is the end of the month. If I start today, I only get one month of records." "Then don't waste a day," Eleanor said. She wrote a name and number on a napkin. "This is the market manager. Tell him I sent you. A booth this Saturday will draw eyes to your online shop." She stood and squeezed Maya's shoulder. "One month. Every dollar counted and logged. I can open the door. You have to walk through it." Maya walked home holding the napkin like it might blow away. She had a plan now, and a name, and one ally on the council. But the clock had not slowed. She had exactly thirty days to build a sales record from nothing, prove it on paper, and survive one vote. She spread her sketches on the barn floor and started drawing the first sticker sheet before the door even closed.
