Chapter 4

The market manager called Maya back on Wednesday. His voice was flat. He would give her a booth, but only if she staffed it every Saturday for a month. One missed week and the spot went to someone else. Maya gripped the phone. Saturday was her ice cream shift. The parlor job was the steady paycheck the council already trusted. She could not drop it. But she could not run the booth from behind a scoop counter either. She sat on the barn floor and stared at both problems. The sticker sales needed the booth. The ledger needed the paycheck. She could not be in two places at once. Then she thought of Tyler. Tyler was her younger cousin. He trailed after older kids all summer, always hoping to belong. Half the family looked through him. But Tyler could drive, and Tyler showed up when nobody asked. Maya called him and explained the booth, the shift, the month. "You want me to scoop ice cream," Tyler said. "Every Saturday. So I can sell at the market." A pause. "For the animals." "For the animals." "Okay," he said. That was all. No questions about pay. Saturday came. Maya walked Tyler into the parlor and introduced him to the man who had hired her. The owner watched Tyler tie the apron and fumble the first cone. Then Tyler got the second one right. The owner nodded once and let him stay. Maya ran to the market. She set up her folding table with the sticker packs fanned in neat rows. She had brought two rescue bunnies in a soft pen, a bonded pair who leaned against each other and never spooked. Kids crowded the table to see them. Parents bought stickers while their children watched the bunnies groom. She sold out of three designs by noon. She logged every dollar in her notebook, careful, dated, real. The market manager passed by, saw the crowd, and wrote her name in his book for the next Saturday. At closing she counted her cash twice. Enough to feed the animals for a week, and a record the council could read. She texted Tyler. He answered fast. "Sold out of mint. Boss says I can come back." Maya smiled at the screen. Both jobs covered. Both would pay. Her Saturdays were solved. Then the manager stopped at her table one last time. He tapped her notebook. "Nice numbers," he said. "But the council doesn't count cash you write down yourself. They want proof anyone can check. Bank deposits. Online receipts. Signed records." He shrugged. "Loose cash in a notebook? They'll throw it out." Maya looked down at her careful pages. A month of Saturdays, and none of it would count the way she'd kept it. She had the sales. She did not have the proof. And the deadline had not moved.
