Chapter 1

The summer dance was three nights away, and Mel owned nothing to wear but the clothes she mucked stalls in. She stood in the barn, boots deep in straw, brushing down the black horse she'd raised from a foal. Across the fence line lived the rival ranch's heir, the boy she'd watched from her saddle for two years. This was the year she meant to change how he looked at her. But a girl couldn't win a heart smelling of hay and horse sweat. She went inside the farmhouse and dug through her closet. She found one dress. It hung crooked on its hanger, gray and shapeless, two sizes too big. It had been her mother's, before her mother left. Mel held it against her body in the window's light. The hem stopped above her ankle. A moth had eaten a hole near the collar. She pictured herself walking onto the dance floor in it. She pictured the other girls, in real dresses, covering their mouths. Word would reach him before she crossed the room. She hung the dress back up. Mel had no money for a store dress. But she had two hands and a mother's old sewing box. She carried the box to the kitchen table and opened it. Inside sat thread, a pincushion, and a pair of steel shears. She had never sewn a stitch in her life. She worked past midnight. She cut the dress down, pinned the seams, and stitched them tight. Her fingers bled where the needle slipped. When she tried it on, the shoulders puckered and the waist sagged. She tore the seams out and started over. She did this four times. By the third night she gave up on the dress. It would never look right. She sat on the barn floor, defeated, staring at the clothes she actually knew how to wear. Her work shirt. Her denim. Her boots. The hat on the peg. Then an idea landed. She didn't have to hide the ranch. She could wear it proud. She pulled her best red shirt from the drawer, the one with the stitched shoulders. She pressed it flat. She scrubbed her black pants clean and buffed her boots until the leather shone. She set the cowgirl hat square on her head and looked at her reflection in the barn window. She looked like herself, only sharper. Bold. A cowgirl who belonged on any floor. No other girl would show up in a hat. Mel folded the outfit over her arm and grinned. The dress problem was solved. She'd walk in as exactly what she was, and let him laugh or not. Then she remembered. The rival ranch had sent an invitation weeks ago. She'd never opened it. She found the envelope on the shelf, tore it, and read. The summer dance had a rule this year, printed in bold at the bottom. Formal dress only. No ranch wear. No hats.
