Chapter 11

Ted's hand still held Mel's when the barn light shifted. She had won him at last. But driving home that night, she remembered her mother's face at the door, the vet's steady lie, the story her family still believed. To them, she had spent that night nursing a sick horse. Not choosing a poor cowboy with an empty barn. She could keep the lie. Or she could tell them the truth and let the whole ranch talk. She stewed on it for two days. Then Ted drove out to her family's place. He came in his old truck, the black horse trailered behind, its coat sleek and healed. He stopped at the fence and got out. He did not sneak. He did not hide. "What are you doing here?" Mel crossed the yard fast. Her mother watched from the porch. "You told me you picked me," Ted said. "I figured I'd stop being a secret." He looked past her at the house. "Unless you want me gone." Mel's heart pounded. This was the moment she'd dreaded. One word and the cover story held. One word and everyone knew. She turned to the porch. Her mother had come down the steps now, wiping her hands on a towel. Her brother hung back by the barn, the only one who'd ever known Mel's heart. "Mama," Mel said. Her voice shook, then steadied. "The night the vet drove me home. I wasn't only tending a horse." She reached back and took Ted's hand. "I stayed at his place. His horse went lame after the dance. Nothing happened but that." She breathed. "And I've picked him. Ted Marshal. That's the truth." The yard went quiet. Her mother looked at Ted, then at the healed black horse, then at their joined hands. Mel braced for the anger. For talk of the empty barn, the poor spread, the shame. Her mother folded the towel slow. "You lied to me," she said. "I did. I'm sorry for it." "The vet lied too." "To spare me. That part's on me." Her mother studied Ted a long moment. "You brought the horse back healthy. And you came to the front, not the back." She nodded once. "That's more than the Caldwell boy ever did." She turned for the house. "Wash up. You'll both eat supper and tell it straight this time." Mel's knees nearly buckled. Her brother grinned wide from the barn. Ted squeezed her hand. "That went better than the salt lick," he murmured. But Mel wasn't laughing yet. She'd told her family. The lie was dead. Now the whole valley would learn a Harrison girl had turned from the Caldwell heir to a cowboy with nothing but a good horse and honest hands. And the Caldwell spread would hear of it first.
