Chapter 16

The stakes stood in the ground a week, and no crew came. Mel rode the fence line each morning, counting nothing. Winter smelled close in the air. Her herd stood in the open pasture where the barn should rise, and the first hard frost would find them there. She had the lumber. She had the plan. She had two pairs of hands and a wall that took eight. Ted met her at the foundation on his black horse. She rode the brown. He looked at the stacked boards and shook his head. "I asked three men yesterday. All three looked at their boots and said no." "The Caldwells reach that far." Mel swung down. "Then we stop asking men who owe them." Ted frowned. "Everyone in the valley owes them something." "Not everyone." Mel walked to the boards and laid her hand on the top plank. "The old rancher who bought my hay at the market. He bought first, when nobody else would. He doesn't sell through the mill. He runs his own stock and sells his own beef." Ted straightened. "You think he'd swing a hammer for us?" "I think he already crossed the Caldwells once to help me. And he knows every man like him. The ones the family never bought." They rode out that afternoon. The old rancher was mending his own fence when they found him. He listened to Mel with a nail held between his teeth. When she finished, he spat the nail into his palm. "They cut you off, so you sold around them," he said. "Now they scare off your crew, so you want the men they can't scare." He almost smiled. "There's more of us than they think. We just keep quiet." He named four others by nightfall. Mel wrote them down on the back of her father's map. They came on Saturday, six men and their sons, wagons loaded with their own tools. Mel and Ted had the boards squared and the posts set. The old rancher took the far corner and called the count. On three, they lifted the first wall together. It rose slow, groaning, then swung upright and dropped into its notches. The men drove the braces home. By dusk three walls stood. The frame threw a long shadow over Mel's herd, and for the first time the animals had something to stand against the wind. Mel stood back and looked at it. She had beaten the squeeze at the market. Now she'd raised a wall the Caldwells swore she couldn't. Ted came and stood beside her, sweat dark on his shirt. "We did it," he said. "Partners." Then the old rancher walked over, wiping his hands. His face had gone serious. "You should know," he said. "A Caldwell rode past twice today. Slow. Counting our wagons." He looked at Mel. "They know who came. Every man here just picked your side out loud." Mel looked at the six wagons in her yard. She had her crew. And now the family knew each of their names.
