Chapter 18

The barn was closed against the snow, but the old rancher's words stayed with Mel through the night. The Caldwells owned the note on his grazing lease. He had helped her, and now they could call it in. She lay awake and counted what she had to offer him. Nothing. No spare land. Her fields grew hay, not grass. She could not feed his cattle if the Caldwells took his grass away. At dawn she found Ted in the new barn, forking feed to the herd. He looked up when she came in. "You didn't sleep," he said. "He's going to lose his lease," Mel said. "For the tin. For helping us. And I've got no way to make it right." Ted set down the fork. He came and stood close. "Your fields cut more hay than your herd needs now. We proved that at the market." He watched her face. "We give him the surplus. Free feed through winter. If they pull his grass, he can still keep his cattle alive." Mel turned the idea over. Hay could travel where grass could not. It was the one thing she had too much of. "It won't stop the Caldwells," she said. "No," Ted said. "But it keeps him standing." They rode out together to the old rancher's place. He was mending fence when they came up. He straightened slow and looked at them without smiling. "They rode past again," he said. "Papers coming any day. I'll lose the grass by spring." Mel got down from her horse. "Then take my hay," she said. "All my surplus. Every winter, as long as I cut more than I need. Your cattle won't go hungry, grass or no grass." The old man stared at her. "That's a lot of hay to give away." "It's not a gift," Mel said. "You saved my herd. I'm saving yours. We're square, and then we're partners." He wiped his hands on his coat. For a long moment he said nothing. Then his mouth bent into something like a grin. "Partners," he said. He stuck out his hand and Mel shook it hard. The Caldwells pulled his lease three days later. The papers came just as he'd said. But Mel's wagon was already rolling, loaded high with hay, cutting a track through the snow to his barn. His cattle ate. He kept every head. That night Ted found Mel at the fence line, watching the last light go. He took her cold hand in both of his. "You held him up," he said. "When it would've been easier to walk away." He pressed something small into her palm. A ring, plain and bright. "I want to build the rest of it with you. All of it." Mel looked at the ring, then at him. The dance was still weeks off. But she already knew her answer.
