Chapter 20

The dance filled the barn near the edge of the valley. Lanterns hung from the rafters. Fiddles sawed a fast tune, and boots stamped the plank floor. Mel stood at the wall in her borrowed red dress, Ted beside her. She had come to speak. But the Caldwell family owned half this room. She saw their heir near the front, ringed by ranch owners who leaned when he spoke. If she opened her mouth in the open, they would drown her out before she reached the crowd. "I can't shout over all of them," Mel said. "They'll turn it into a joke. I need the room quiet first." Ted watched the fiddler a moment. Then he grinned, the same grin he wore when a plan came to him. "You remember the man who plays for us," he said. "I called in a favor from him once, for you. Time to call in one more." He crossed the floor and spoke low in the fiddler's ear. Mel could not hear the words. She saw the man nod. The tune ended. The dancers slowed, breathing hard, waiting for the next song. It did not come. The fiddler set his bow down and pointed his chin at Mel. The silence spread. Heads turned. Even the Caldwell heir looked up from his circle, mouth half open on some word he never finished. Mel's throat went tight. Every eye in the barn found her. She could feel the Caldwells gathering breath to cut her off. So she spoke first, loud and plain. "I'm marrying Ted Marshal," she said. "Two weeks from Sunday. In our own barn, on our own land." A murmur ran the floor. One of the ranch owners near the heir laughed short and mean. "No church will have you," he called. "I know it," Mel said. "The Caldwells saw to that. So we built our own place to stand." She held her chin level. "Every one of you who came when I called is welcome. The rest can stay home." The old rancher who had roofed her barn stepped out from the crowd. He clapped once, then again, slow and hard. Two of the men who raised her walls joined him. The sound grew until it filled the space the fiddle had left. The Caldwell heir turned and walked out the far door. His circle broke apart behind him. Ted reached Mel and took her hand. "You did it," he said. "The whole valley heard." "They did." Mel's heart still pounded. She had said it out loud, in front of everyone, and no one had stopped her. The wedding was real now. It had a date and witnesses. Then the weight of it settled. Two weeks. A barn with no benches, no food set out, no plan past the walls and the roof. She had promised the whole valley a wedding. Now she had to make one.
