Chapter 9

Three days after the dance, Dr. Venda's truck came back up the ranch lane. She had the black horse trailered behind her, shod and sound. Mel walked out to meet her, still turning the same question in her head. She owed Ted for the gown, the fiddle song, the night, the cover story. But she could not tell if that debt was pushing her toward him or if she had truly chosen him. Until she knew, every soft word she gave Ted was a lie waiting to happen. Dr. Venda backed the trailer near the red timber barn and dropped the ramp. "He's fine now," she said. "New shoes all around. Ted asked me to bring him by so you could see the leg healed." "Ted asked you." Mel led the black horse down the ramp. He stepped even and easy, no limp at all. "Another favor. He keeps stacking them up. I can't pay him back fast enough to catch up." Dr. Venda leaned against the trailer and watched her. "You sound like you're doing sums." "I am. I owe him for everything. I don't know if I like him or just owe him." Mel ran her hand down the horse's neck. "How do you tell the difference?" The vet was quiet a moment. "When I pull a calf at three in the morning, I don't do it for thanks. I do it because I can't leave the animal hurting." She nodded at the horse. "Ted trailered a lame horse an hour twice for you. Called in favors. Lied to no one but bent the truth to save you. A man paying a debt does the minimum. A man doing more than the minimum wants something else." Mel stopped. "That's him, not me. I asked how I feel." "Then answer this fast, no thinking." Dr. Venda straightened. "The heir walks in that barn right now and says he was wrong, your ranch is fine, come dance. What do you do?" Mel opened her mouth for the old answer. It did not come. She saw the heir's smirk at the feed store, his back turning at the dance. Then she saw Ted at the fiddler's stand, arranging one more song for her while she chased another man. Her chest went tight and sure. "I'd tell him no," Mel said. "I wouldn't even think about it." "There's your answer." Dr. Venda picked up the ramp. "You didn't pick Ted because you owe him. You owe him because you already picked him." Mel led the black horse into the barn and latched the stall. The debt was still real. But it was not the whole of it, and now she knew. She wanted Ted. That was the truth under everything. The problem was, she had told him she owed him. She had never once told him she wanted him. And a man kept paying debts for a woman who never said the other thing.
