Chapter 3

Weeks passed. Melody made it out of the woods and back into her own life. She rented a small room. She filled her backpack with her own things again. Slowly, she pieced the days together. She called her cousin first. Then the coffee friend Jeffrey had chased off. One by one, her people came back. She started a journal again. She danced in her kitchen with bare feet on cold tile. She signed up for a class she had wanted for years. Each small choice was hers. For seven years she had made choices for someone else. Now she was learning her own name again. But the days did not feel clean. Her heart hurt without warning. She would be laughing with her cousin, and then her chest would crack open. She cried in the grocery store once, over nothing. She cried folding laundry. The white cat watched her from the windowsill, calm and steady, as if it understood. She missed him. That was the part no one warned her about. She had left Jeffrey, and she still missed the shape of him in her day. Some mornings she almost texted him before she remembered he was blocked. The grief came even though she knew the truth. She could know he was poison and still ache for him. One night the ache grew too big. She sat on her floor with her journal in her lap. She wanted to write that she had made a mistake. She wanted to go back to the easy quiet of letting him decide. Her hand shook over the page. Then she felt them. The two glowing girls stood in her doorway, pale and soft, the way they had at the treeline. They did not speak. They never did. One of them pointed, not at the door, not back toward the woods, but down at the open journal in her lap. Melody looked at the blank page. Her own page. She understood what they meant. The way out was not through him. It was through her own hand, her own words. She began to write. She wrote that her heart was in pieces. She wrote that she missed him and that missing him was not the same as needing him. She wrote that she was still in there, and this time she believed it. The cat climbed into her lap. The glowing girls faded, their work done. By morning the page was full. The ache had not vanished. But Melody had not gone back. She had chosen her new path, with a broken heart, without him. She closed the journal and set it in her backpack, next to her own things. She had started over alone. That was the win, and it was also the wound. She was free now, and freedom hurt more than she had expected.
