Chapter 4

The class met in a wide room with mirrors on every wall. Melody signed up for it weeks ago, back when each small choice felt like a win. She danced alone in her kitchen now. She wrote in her journal again. But dancing where people could watch was different. She stood at the door with her backpack on her shoulders and her bare feet cold on the floor. The teacher waved her in. Other students stretched along the mirror. Melody set her backpack down and tried to copy them. Then the music started. Everyone moved. She lifted her arms, and her chest went tight. Jeffrey's voice came back to her. He had called her dancing cute, the way you call a child's drawing cute. She remembered how he went quiet when strangers looked at her. She froze. Her arms dropped. She felt them all seeing her, and the old shame climbed up her throat. She slipped to the back wall and sat down. She pulled her knees up. The music kept going without her. She wanted to grab her backpack and leave. Then she felt them. The two glowing girls stood in the far corner, pale and soft, the same as the night in her doorway. No one else turned to look. The girls did not point at the door. One of them lifted her arms, slow, the way a dancer would. The other turned in a small circle. They were showing her. They were dancing for no one, and they did not look ashamed. Melody watched. She thought about her kitchen, her cold tile, her bare feet moving when nobody watched. That was real. The shame was Jeffrey's voice, not hers. She could know the shame was his and still feel it. But feeling it did not mean she had to obey it. She stood up. Her legs shook. She walked back into the middle of the room. The mirror showed a short girl with big eyes and a wild, scared face. She lifted her arms again. This time she did not stop. She let the music move her feet. She turned. She messed up a step and kept going. A woman beside her smiled, and for once Melody did not cut it short. She smiled back. She danced the whole song. People saw her, and she did not break. When the music ended, she was out of breath and grinning. The glowing girls were gone. Their work was done. Melody picked up her backpack. She had danced where others could see. She had not frozen for good. The shame still lived in her, quiet in the corner, but she had moved anyway. For seven years she stayed small so no one would look. Tonight she let them look, and she did not disappear.
