Chapter 2

Whisper found her at dawn, drifting across the mansion's wide lawn like a sheet of fog. The dark harp trailed behind, plucking thin notes into the grass. Whisper kept her distance and watched. Loneliness, she thought, had a shape. It looked like a girl who could not feel her own feet. "Melody." Whisper stepped closer. "You've been walking in circles." Melody only blinked at her, then turned toward the open doors of the mansion. Whisper followed. The black kitten trotted at their heels, a small bell-less collar gone from its throat. The ballroom swallowed them in pale light. Moonlight poured through tall windows onto a checkered marble floor, glossy and cold. Melody walked to the center where the harp settled. She brushed her fingers across the strings. A memory tugged — soft hands, a song, a small warm weight in her lap — then slipped away. The notes rang hollow. The moonlight shifted and struck a dark album lying open on the floor. Whisper knelt beside it. Inside were old photographs: a young woman holding a black kitten, the same woman playing a harp in this very room, smiling. Beside the album lay the kitten's lost collar. Its tag was a single music note. "This is you," Whisper said quietly. "And her." The kitten was not in the room. They searched — under benches, behind curtains, down the long hall — until Whisper found her curled in a patch of moonlight on the marble. Melody knelt and fastened the collar back around the small black throat. The kitten purred. A name rose in Melody's chest like a held breath finally let go. "Enchantra," she whispered. "Her name is Enchantra." The harp shivered. Then it sang. Not sorrow, not grief — something clear and warm and impossibly kind. Whisper sat back on her heels and listened. Melody pressed her hand to the kitten's fur and, for the first time, felt the music. She wept, finally, and the tears did not hurt. The curse had cracked open. What spilled out was beautiful.
