The cracked curse left a soft ache behind. Melody still touched the harp strings each morning, and sometimes a lonely note slipped out. The ballroom was too big for small sounds. Every note bounced off the marble and came back twisted. She could not read her own music here. In the corner, Enchantra slept on a grey velvet pouf, its black ribbon tied with a tiny music note. A treble clef plaque hung on the wall above — the spot where feeling had first returned. Melody needed a quieter place to play. Somewhere the notes would land clean. She drifted out the mansion doors with the harp trailing behind her, looking for nothing in particular. That was when she saw the sign. A dark wooden board, painted with white notes. Band Recruitment, it read, in a hush of a voice. Melody stopped. New friends. A new life. She followed the path it pointed her toward. The hidden clearing held a stage she had not expected. Dark wood, feline carvings, orange lanterns, draped cloth in purple and rust. Whisper Thornpaw stood at its edge, tambourine in hand. "You came," Whisper said. "Step up. Play me something." Melody climbed onto the stage. She set the harp before her and touched the strings, ready for the lonely sound. Instead, something inside her lifted. The stage held her notes like cupped hands. She felt happy — plainly, simply happy — and the harp sang back to her full and bright. No sorrow. No twist. Just music she could finally read. Whisper lowered her tambourine. "That," she said, "is a yes." She offered a paw. Melody took it. The ballroom's echoes were behind her now. She had a stage, a friend, and a sound that was hers.
