Chapter 5

Mike woke on the third morning to gray light through the tavern's high windows. The burn on his side had cooled to a dull ache. He sat up and tested it. The skin held. He could stand. He could ride. But the queen's court had passed two nights ago. His window was gone. He waited for the loss to sting. It did not come. He felt only the quiet of the room and the smell of bread from the kitchen. Nia found him lacing his boots. She leaned in the doorway, arms crossed, white fur catching the light. Her yellow eyes moved over him the way they had the first night, counting a cost. "You're standing," she said. "So you'll ride north for Zara now. Chase her stolen thing. Then off to your queen." Mike looked at the tusks on the table, the trophy he had bled for. He had wanted them to buy a crown's favor. Now they seemed like a heavy thing to carry to a woman he had never met. "The court is over," he said. "I missed it." "Then make the next one," Nia said. But she did not push. She watched his face. Dara came in with a tray and set it beside him without a word. Luna followed, chewing a strip of dried meat. She looked at the tusks, then at Mike. "You don't want the queen," she said. Flat. Not a question. Mike said nothing. "He wants a warm room and food that doesn't argue back," Luna said. She sat on the bench. Sela slipped in behind her and took the last stool, tucking her legs up, watching him with her amber eyes. Mike laughed for the first time in days. The sound surprised him. "A queen never fed me," he said. "Never burned the rot out of my side. Never held me down on a table." He looked at the four of them filling the small room. "You did." Nia's ears turned. "Careful," she said. "You say that to soften the fact you gave up." "I'm not soft," Mike said. He stood to his full height, near the low beams. "I'm choosing. I don't ride for a crown I never wanted. I stay. I earn my place here." The room went still. Sela's tail curled. Dara set the tray down harder than she meant to. Nia pushed off the doorframe and crossed to him. She was small against his chest. She looked up, and the counting left her eyes. "An alpha who stays," she said. "That's worth more than tusks." Then a boy ran in from the front, breathless. He held a scrap of paper. "For the tall man," he said. "From the wolf woman with the horses. She says she rides north at dawn. She says you gave your word." Mike took the note. The warmth in the room did not change. But Zara was waiting, and a promise still had his name on it.
