Chapter 6

Mike held Zara's note by the fire long after the boy left. The court had passed. But the pack women still whispered of the queen. They said she held court again, in secret, for those who dared come. He looked at the boar tusks on the table. Once they meant everything. Now they were just old bone. He could not carry them to her. They had lost their weight in his hands. Sela slid onto the bench beside him. She was the newcomer of the pack, the dirty-blonde one Dara and Luna had pulled off the road and taught to pour mead. She still watched the room like she might have to run from it. Her green tunic was damp from the kitchen. "You're chewing on that paper with your eyes," she said. "What is it?" "A gift I don't have," Mike said. "The queen wants sacrifice. Not gold. Not trophies I bled for and stopped caring about." Luna leaned in the doorway. She did not sit. "Then you have nothing," she said. Flat. "He has us," Dara said from the stairs. She came down slow. In her hands she carried a folded gray cloth, worn thin at the edges. She set it on the table beside the tusks. "Nia's old soldier tunic. From the war. Before the tavern." Mike touched it. The cloth was soft and dark with age. "This is hers," he said. "I can't take this to a queen." "You're not taking it," Dara said. "You're staying. That's the point." She looked at him hard. "The queen respects giving up something that costs you. So does Nia. You had a crown in reach. You put it down for scraps and a warm room and us." Sela's tail brushed his leg. "The whispers say the queen still holds court," she said. "But you already made your sacrifice. You gave her up." Mike went quiet. He understood then. The gift was never a thing to carry. It was the choice itself. He had bled for a trophy to buy a stranger's favor. Now he would keep his word to Zara, ride north, and come back here. To them. That was the offering he could actually make. He stood and dropped the tusks into the cold hearth ash. They clattered and lay still. "I ride at dawn for Zara," he said. "I get back what her pack lost. Then I come home to this door." Luna's ears turned. "Home," she repeated. She did not correct it. Dara folded the old tunic and pressed it into his hands. "Then take this," she said. "Not for the queen. For the cold road north." Mike took it. The court could wait. The whispers could wait. His word to Zara could not. At dawn he would ride, and the thing he chased was no longer a crown.
