Chapter 4

Mildred drove north until the light faded, then took a motel room to wait for morning. She set the shamrock charm on the nightstand. The name and town would cut five women down to one. But she could not sleep. The stone at the charm's center kept catching the lamplight. It seemed to move on its own. She picked the charm up and held it close. The green leaves were covered in small gold marks. Some were the date and town she already knew. Others were strange symbols she did not recognize. She ran her thumb over each leaf. Then she felt a seam. The charm was not one piece. It split along a thin line, like a locket meant to open. Mildred pried her nail into the gap. The two halves parted with a soft click. Inside the second half sat a matching stone, dark and cold. No light lived in it at all. She turned both halves under the lamp. One glowed. One did not. Two pieces, made to fit together. She stared at the dead half. Words were scratched inside it, smaller than the ones outside. She held it to the light and read them slowly. It was not a date or a town. It was a line of instruction: "The pair must be joined at the county office." Below that, a case number. Her own case number, the one from the caseworker's notebook. Mildred sat up straight. The charm was a key. Not to a door, but to a record. Her mother had left one half and kept the other. Joined, they pointed back to the very place that had turned Mildred away. The stone building with the tidy windows. The sealed files behind a court order she could not pay for. Her chest tightened. She had chased a name, then a town, then a woman. Now the charm sent her back to the start. Back to the office that had already blocked her once. But this time she held something the clerk had never seen. A case number that matched. A charm with two halves. Proof the mother wanted the child found. Mildred closed both halves in her fist. The glowing side warmed her palm. The dark side stayed cold. She understood now why the caseworker had kept it hidden. It was never just a keepsake. It was a way in. She did not sleep after that. At first light she packed the charm and drove south again, toward the county seat. The office would open at nine. She would stand at the same counter and lay the two halves down. Whatever door they opened, she meant to walk through it. By the time the stone building came into view, Mildred knew the truth. The town from the engraving had told her where her mother once lived. But the charm told her where the answer was stored. She had traded one lead for a harder one. The office held it. And this time she would not leave empty-handed.
