Chapter 5

Mildred hit every red light on the way south. The stone building came into view just as the sky turned gray. She parked and ran to the door with the charm in her fist. But the lights inside were dark. A hand-lettered sign hung crooked in the glass. The office had closed early for the day. She pounded on the door anyway. A flashlight beam swung toward her. An old man in a wrinkled uniform unlocked the door but did not open it wide. He was the night watchman. His name tag was scratched blank. He kept one boot wedged against the frame. "We're closed," he said. "Come back at nine." "I have to reach the records," Mildred said. She held up the shamrock charm. Both halves caught the flashlight. The glowing leaves shimmered, and the small stone at the center flickered like a watching eye. "This opens a sealed file. My file." The watchman stopped moving. He stared at the charm. His face went slack. "I've seen that before," he said quietly. "A long time ago." Mildred lowered her hand. "Where? Who had it?" "A woman came here once. Years back. She sat in the lobby all day." He rubbed his jaw. "She wouldn't leave. Said she'd hidden something in the record for a child. Said the child would come someday, holding a green charm like that one." Mildred's throat went tight. "Did she leave a name?" "No name. But she left worried. Kept looking at the door like the child might walk in that minute." He shook his head. "That was the only time. I never saw her again." "That was my mother," Mildred said. The words came out before she could stop them. "Let me in. Please. I have the charm. I have the case number." The watchman's grip stayed firm on the door. "I can't. I don't handle files. I watch the building." He glanced back into the dark hall. "The charm won't open anything without a clerk. That's the rule. Court order or the clerk's key. Those are the only two ways in." Mildred pressed the two halves together in her palm. The glowing side warmed. The dark side stayed cold. "Then tell me when the clerk comes." "Nine sharp," he said. "But listen." He leaned closer. "Your mother told the clerk that day to log a note on the file. So they'd know the charm was real. If that note's still there, no one can turn you away again." The door clicked shut. The lock turned. Mildred stood on the step with the charm burning in her fist. She had come to open the file tonight and failed. But she had traded one closed door for a name that mattered more. Her mother had sat in that lobby, waiting for her. And somewhere in the sealed record, a note waited too. At nine, she would find it.
