Chapter 6

The lock had turned. Mildred stood on the step with hours to kill and nowhere to go. The watchman's boots faded down the hall. She sat on the cold stone, back against the door, and waited for nine. The night dragged. She walked the empty lot to stay warm. She tried to nap in her car but jerked awake at every noise. Twice she almost drove home. The charm stopped her. She pulled it out and stared at the glowing shamrock, its center stone bright as an open eye. The leaves shimmered when she turned it, as if it saw something she couldn't. "Nine," she told it. "Just get me to nine." Gray light came at last. A small woman in a gray cardigan crossed the lot, keys jingling in one hand, a paper cup in the other. She stopped when she saw Mildred slumped by the door. "We open at nine," she said. "Not a minute before." "I know." Mildred stood, stiff and cold. "I've been waiting all night. I have a sealed file. My file." She held up the charm. The clerk's eyes moved to the glowing halves. Her cup stopped halfway to her mouth. "You have the green one," she said quietly. She set the cup on the step. "There's a note on that file. Been there years. I read it every time I clean the drawer." She looked at Mildred's face, then the charm, then Mildred again. "It says a woman would come holding this. It says to help her." "Will you?" Mildred's voice cracked. "The rule needs a court order or a key." The clerk unlocked the door and pushed it open. "I have the key." She waved Mildred inside. "Come on. Before I lose my nerve." They walked back through the dark hall to a wall of steel drawers. The clerk found the case number on a slip Mildred handed her. She slid out a long drawer and lifted a thick folder tied with faded string. "Join the halves," she said. "The note says that's how you prove it's real." Mildred pressed the glowing half against the dark half. They clicked and held. The whole shamrock lit up, and the stone at its heart flared white. The clerk cut the string. Inside lay a sealed envelope with Mildred's case number on the front. Beside it sat a small object wrapped in cloth. Mildred's hands shook as she lifted the envelope. Her mother's handwriting curved across the flap. Two words: "For my daughter." "That's yours," the clerk said. "Nobody can turn you away now. It's logged." Mildred held the envelope she had chased for thirty-five years. The file was open. The wall she'd hit again and again had finally come down. Whatever her mother had left, whatever the wrapped object was, the answer sat in her hands at last.
