Chapter 1

The pack healer went down in the snow three hours after moonrise, and Mir was the only one who knew where his old wounds were. She reached him before the hunters finished shouting. Her father stood back with the others. He watched her kneel. He did not tell her to stop, and he did not tell her to lead. Mir was the alpha's daughter in a pack that had never had a female alpha. She had asked for the right to lead and her father had not answered yes or no. Two weeks from now she would be twenty-five. She had spent three seasons watching this healer work without being taught, and tonight that was the only thing between him and the dawn. They had dragged him inside a ring of fur blankets on packed snow, the spot where he had fallen. His breathing was shallow. Mir pushed back his collar and found the scar along his collarbone she had catalogued two winters ago. It was hot. The old break in his ribs was cold. She started there. She sent two wolves running to his stone hut for the wooden case of numbered vials he kept on the second shelf. Fin Darkwater brought it back himself. He set the case down beside her knee and opened the lid without asking. The vials were labeled in the healer's hand, numbers only. Mir knew the numbers because she had watched him count them out over three seasons of small hurts. She uncorked four. Fin held the healer's head up so she could get the powders into his mouth. "What else," Fin said. Not a question. An offer. "Water. Heat on the ribs. Keep the others back." She did not raise her voice. Fin moved. Thera Ironvow was already moving the ring of onlookers back a full pace, her hand flat against a challenger's chest. "She's working," Thera said, once, and the challenger stepped back. Mir read the healer's belly with the flats of her fingers and found the old spleen wound swollen under the skin. She chose vial nine. She chose vial two. She worked through the case until his breath deepened and the blue left his mouth. By the time the sky went gray, the healer was asleep and breathing even. Mir sat back on her heels. Her father had come close at some point. He was looking at her the way he looked at her when she sat with grieving wolves — proud, and silent. He did not name what she had done. He turned and walked back toward the fires. Thera watched him go. Fin did not. Mir closed the vial case and understood, with a cold clarity, that saving the healer would not be enough. The pack now had a healer who owed her his life, and a challenger who would hear about it before noon.
