Chapter 2

News reached Mir at the edge of the training yard the morning after the healing. Her father had sent riders to the neighboring pack. An envoy was coming to witness the succession. If she was not presented before the envoy arrived, she would not be counted. She had four days. She did not know the old ways of reading a wolf's stance before a challenge, and every male challenger in the pack did. Fin Darkwater found her at the edge of the yard and said he would teach her. He named a clearing past the north ridge where no one would watch. She said yes before she let herself think about why he had offered. They worked for two hours in the clearing. Fin showed her the shoulder drop that came before a lunge, the weight shift that meant a feint. He did not touch her to correct her. He described the angles and let her copy him. The snow started as a hush at the tree line and then came sideways. Fin took her wrist once, briefly, and pulled her toward the rocks. The wind erased their tracks behind them. He found a small cave in the rise and pushed her in ahead of him. He blocked the mouth with his back until the worst of it passed, then built a small fire from what he carried. She woke in the dark with his arm across her ribs and his breath at the back of her neck. The pull hit her before she was fully awake. It was not a thought. It was a rope in her chest going taut. She understood, in one clean second, that he was her mate and that her body had known before her mind. He was still asleep. His hand was slack on her stomach. She turned inside the circle of his arm and looked at his face in the low firelight. She had four days and a father who had not answered her, and a pack that had never had a female alpha. She leaned in and kissed him. He woke into the kiss. For half a breath he was only Fin, startled, still. Then his wolf came up behind his eyes and he took her mouth like he had been waiting years to do it. He rolled her under him and set his teeth against the join of her neck and shoulder and bit down. The mark took. Her wolf answered before she could decide. She pulled his collar aside and marked him back, hard, and tasted iron. They lay in the dark after, breathing. Fin's hand shook against her hip. He said her name once, like a question he did not know how to finish. Mir pressed her palm flat over the mark on his throat and understood that she would walk into her father's hall in four days already bonded, already claimed, and that the envoy would see it on her skin before she said a word.
