Chapter 3

The child woke to find the portrait had changed. The scratched-out face was gone. In its place, staring back from the canvas, was their own. Same horns. Same shape of jaw. Same eyes that had watched their mother die. They touched their face, then the painting, feeling for wet paint. The surface was dry and cracked with age. They carried the portrait into the woods, following a path their mother had walked a hundred times. The trees opened onto a clearing where charred stumps stood in a perfect circle, their centers glowing faint orange like dying coals. The child had never been here before. In the middle of the circle sat a blue orb wrapped in black tendrils, casting cold light across the burnt ground. They set the portrait against the nearest stump. The light touched the painted face and made it flicker, like it was breathing. The child pulled the knife from their belt and pressed the blade against the canvas where the stranger's scratched-out face had been. They needed to know if the paint would bleed fresh, if someone was changing it right now, somewhere. The blade sank in and the canvas split. Underneath was another layer of paint showing the same scratched face, older and more faded. And beneath that, another. The child kept cutting until they reached bare canvas. No fresh paint. No trick. The portrait had been layered over and over, painted again each time the face underneath was destroyed. They looked at the orb in the center of the clearing and understood. Their mother hadn't left these portraits as memories. She'd left them as warnings. The stranger kept coming back, kept being erased, and now the child's face had replaced theirs. Not because of magic. Because of choice. Their mother had marked them as the next traveler, the next person to walk through the archway carved with symbols the child had seen on the map. The knife felt heavier in their hand. They wrapped the destroyed portrait around it and left the clearing, but they couldn't leave behind what they now knew. The scar on their mother's arm wasn't just from staying too long. It was from coming back.
