Chapter 4

The child returned to the clearing the next morning. The burnt circle looked different in daylight. The charred stumps cast no shadows. The ground inside the circle was darker than ash, darker than soil, like someone had pressed ink into the earth and let it set. They knelt at the edge and touched the boundary. The ground was warm. Not hot like fire. Warm like skin. Something had been built here. The structure rose from the center of the circle, iron and glass twisted into a dome that shouldn't exist. The child had walked this path yesterday and seen nothing but the blue orb and burnt stumps. Now a greenhouse stood where empty air had been, its glass panels catching light that didn't come from the sun. Inside, purple flowers grew in thick clusters, their petals curved like open mouths. The child recognized the color. It matched the rash that had spread across their mother's arms before she died. They tried the greenhouse door. Locked. They pressed their face to the glass and saw the flowers breathing, petals opening and closing in rhythm. The blue orb sat at the center of the structure, half-buried in soil that pulsed with each breath the flowers took. Around the greenhouse, standing in a ring just outside the burnt circle, were seven stone archways covered in symbols. The same symbols from the map. The same symbols their mother had traced on her arm when the fever made her forget where she was. One archway was larger than the others, its surface cracked and leaking thin streams of purple light that pooled on the ground. The child pulled out the knife and used the blade to pry at the greenhouse lock. The metal bent but the lock held. They struck harder. The blade snapped. The broken piece fell through the glass somehow, landing inside among the purple flowers. The flowers turned toward it. Their mouths opened wider and a sound came out, low and rhythmic, like breathing from deep underground. The burnt ground beneath the child's feet grew warmer. They stepped back from the circle and watched the flowers lean toward where the blade had fallen. The greenhouse hadn't been here yesterday because whatever was waking beneath the threshold hadn't needed it yet. Now it did. The child picked up the broken knife handle and left the clearing, understanding that the structure wasn't built to contain what was beneath. It was built to feed it.
