Chapter 4

The next morning, Vivian would not stop watching Casey. Mrs Rosewood saw it from her desk in the old wooden schoolhouse. Casey sat cross-legged on the floor, pink crayon in hand, drawing butterfly wings. Jam rolled her chair beside her sister. Vivian stood apart, arms folded, blue eyes hard. She had spent all week trying to prove kindness was stupid. Mrs Rosewood felt the room hold its breath. Casey lifted her drawing to the window light, the way her grandmother checked quilts. "Wing wrong," she said flatly. "Have to check." A few children leaned in to look. They smiled at the small girl and her careful work. Vivian's face twisted. No one was watching her. It happened fast. Vivian crossed the floor and swung her fist. Her knuckles struck Casey's nose. Casey fell back. Blood ran over her lip and dripped onto the pink crayon. Casey did not cry. She stared at her own red hand and said, "Wrong." The class went silent. Jam gripped her wheels and shouted her sister's name. Something inside Mrs Rosewood snapped shut. She hated cruelty in children. She had built her whole plan on patience. But this was her daughter bleeding on the floor. She knelt and pressed her sleeve to Casey's nose. "I've got you," she said. Her voice shook. She looked up at Vivian, and for one second she wanted to send the girl away forever. She did not. She stood, took a breath, and reached for the phone on the wall. She called the one person who could hold this. Lily Vilpdude arrived within minutes. The school therapist was very old, with wild grey hair and round glasses, dressed in coat and skirt from another century. A small grey kitten rode in her coat pocket. She had helped Mrs Rosewood's hardest students for years. She did not rush to Vivian. She sat on the floor beside Casey first. "Nose bumps bleed a lot," Lily told Casey gently. "Doesn't mean it's broken. But we check. Always check." Casey looked at her and gave one small nod. Mrs Rosewood watched, grateful and still trembling. Then Lily turned to Vivian, who stood frozen by the window. "You hit her because they were all looking at her," Lily said. Not a question. Vivian's mouth opened. Her eyes filled. She had not meant to draw blood. She had only wanted to be seen. She started to cry, ugly and loud, and no one comforted her. Mrs Rosewood walked Casey outside to sit on the willow swing until the bleeding stopped. Jam rolled beside them. The chapter of pretending kindness was easy had ended. Casey was safe. Vivian was exposed, not as a bully, but as a lonely child who used her fists. Mrs Rosewood understood now. She could not simply protect Casey from Vivian. She would have to reach the girl who had hurt her daughter, or the next punch would land on someone else.
