Chapter 5

The day after Vivian's fist drew blood, Mrs Rosewood sat alone in her flower-fronted bungalow and knew rules would not fix this. Vivian hit because no one looked at her. Casey healed by making things she could hold. Mrs Rosewood needed something the whole class could care for together, something that needed them back. She drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. Inside, a shy corgi pup hid under a bench. Her fur was streaked with dried mud, and a small pink horn curled from her forehead. When Mrs Rosewood knelt, the pup crept out and licked her wrist. Beside her, an old pug scooted forward on stubborn legs, wheezing, eyes shining strange rainbow colors. He grumbled at everyone but refused to leave the corgi's side. Mrs Rosewood watched them lean together. The loud one and the quiet one. She adopted them both. At home, Casey met them first. She sat on the floor and held her drawing up to the light, checking the wings. The muddy corgi bounded over and knocked the paper flat. Casey did not cry. She looked at the pup and said, "You wrong. But okay." The old pug hobbled to Casey's knee and pressed his flat face against her. Casey put one hand on his warm back. She stayed very still. The next morning, Mrs Rosewood brought both dogs to the old wooden schoolhouse. Thirty children rushed the floor. Then they stopped. The corgi shrank behind Mrs Rosewood's pink heels, tail down. The pug planted himself in front of her and grumbled a warning. The room fell quiet. The children did not know how to reach a scared dog. "They're new," Mrs Rosewood said. "They're afraid. You can't grab them. You have to wait, and be gentle, until they trust you." She sat on the floor. The children copied her. They lowered their voices. They held out slow hands. One by one, the corgi crept close and sniffed their fingers. Vivian stood by the window with her arms folded, just as before. Mrs Rosewood carried the grumpy pug to her and set him down. "He doesn't warm up fast," she said. "He'll test you." The pug scooted away from Vivian and grumbled. Vivian's jaw tightened. But she did not swing. She knelt. She waited. She held her sparkly nails flat and open. After a long minute, the pug turned back and leaned his weight against her knee. Vivian went still. Her hard face broke. She looked up at Mrs Rosewood, and for once she was not jealous. She was chosen. "They need names," Mrs Rosewood told the class. Casey answered first, flat and certain. "Cookie. And Moose." The children repeated the names until they stuck. Now the whole class had two small lives to protect, together, every day. Vivian had a job that needed her hands to be soft. Mrs Rosewood had turned a fist into a keeper.
