Chapter 3

Nella opened the shop before eight, as the note had once told her. The kettle warmed. The bell rang twice by mid-morning. Rain started around ten, but it did not sound like the rain from yesterday. She stopped sweeping and stood by the door. The clouds outside were dark, low, the kind that usually brought hard weather. The drops on the glass came down slow and even, no harder than a tap. Thunder rolled somewhere above the roofs, but it reached her ears as a soft silver hum, closer to a bell than a boom. She walked to the front window. On the middle shelf sat a small decorative piece she had not looked at closely before: a glass dome holding a tiny storm inside, clouds curled around a thin fork of light. It glowed when the thunder came, then dimmed. She watched it through three flashes. Each time the sky cracked outside, the piece caught the sound and let it out gentler. A woman came in for bread and stopped at the counter to look at the window. She spoke more softly than she had last week. A boy after her did the same. Nella did not ask them why. She wrote in her notebook: storm in the window, thunder softer near it, customers quiet. She wanted to know if it was the piece doing it, or only the light, or only her. She set a cup of water on the shelf beside the dome and watched. The surface stayed still when thunder rolled. She moved the cup to the far end of the shop. On the next roll, the water shivered. She moved it back. Still. She had her answer. She did not know who had made the piece, or who had placed it there, or why. She decided it did not matter today. She wiped the shelf, straightened the dome, and let it stay. By late afternoon the storm had passed and the street smelled of wet stone. The owner came in with her dog, shook off her coat, looked at the window, and nodded once. Nella climbed the stairs at dusk. The seventh stair creaked. She sat on the bed with her notebook open on her knees and wrote: even a storm can be gentle when something holds it right. She closed the book. Downstairs, the kettle was still warm. She would go down and pour a cup before bed. Tomorrow she would open the shop again, and she would watch the window when the next rain came.
