Chapter 4 of 5

The rain stopped before noon, and the shop dried out slow. Nella wiped the tables one by one. On the first, she found a bent coin, its edge folded like a small mouth. On the second, a blue button with four holes and one loose thread. On the third, a folded receipt with no name on it, only a list: milk, apples, thread. She held all three in her palm and looked at them. She did not want to throw them away. She found a shallow dish on the shelf above the sink, the kind used for spare buttons or paperclips, and set it on the counter beside the kettle. She placed the coin, the button, and the receipt inside. She wrote a small card and leaned it against the dish. Lost things, it said. She went back to sweeping. By noon a man in a wet coat glanced at the dish and smiled without asking. By two, a woman set down a hairpin she said she had carried for a week without knowing why. A boy added a smooth stone. Someone left a stub of green pencil. Nella watched from the counter and did not move any of it. At closing, she counted seven things in the dish. None of them matched. All of them fit. She closed the shop, wiped the counter, and turned off the front lamp. Upstairs she opened her notebook and wrote: people leave small pieces of themselves behind, and if you hold them for a while, leaving can be soft. She closed the book and went down for the kettle. The dish stayed on the counter, ready for tomorrow.
