Nella Voss's Arc

Chapter 5 of 5

Morning came slow to the Warm Window. Nella wiped the counter in long strokes and glanced at the dish beside the kettle. The seven small things sat where she left them. A woman came in near ten, quiet, a scarf pulled high. She had been in the day before. She looked at the counter, then at Nella, and asked in a soft voice if a blue button might be there. Four holes, one loose thread. Nella lifted the dish and set it between them. The woman touched the button with one finger, as if checking it was real. Nella picked it out and placed it in her palm. The woman closed her hand. She said thank you twice, in the same small voice, and left without buying anything. The bell above the door settled. All day, people stopped by the dish. A man leaned in to look and moved on. A girl lifted the green pencil stub, smiled, and put it back. An older customer tapped the rim of the dish twice before ordering bread. None of them took anything. They only checked. Nella understood then. The dish was not for lost objects. It was for being remembered. She refilled the kettle and kept the counter clean around it. That night she climbed the creaking stairs and opened her notebook. She wrote: some places keep track of you gently, even when you forget yourself. She set the pen down and listened to the shop settle beneath her. Tomorrow the dish would be there. So would she.
