Noel Rask crossed the salt marsh with a folded lab map inside his coat and a dead friend on his mind. The Severance vault still held his squirrel companion in a glass drawer, tagged and frozen for study, and he could not open the vault alone. He needed someone who knew the coast, the back trails, and the woman the lab whispered about, the one who treated their runaways. He had followed rumors for two nights. On the third, he found her cabin lamp burning past midnight and a fresh grave under a bent pine. She answered the door with a shovel in her hand. Lyra Stellwyn's eyes were red, her sleeves still dark with soil. Behind her, a teal fox with glowing dotted flanks lay curled by the stove, one ear bandaged. Noel raised both hands and set the map on her step. He told her his name, that he worked inside Severance, and that he wanted the vault burned to the floor. He said he knew the shift rotations, the generator room, the code cycles for the specimen drawers. He said he had watched her carry the fox through the trees last week and had told no one. Lyra did not lower the shovel. She said her grandmother had died three days ago protecting an egg the lab had already moved. She said she could not stand up straight, let alone guide him anywhere. The fox lifted its head and looked at Noel without fear. Noel sat on the step and waited. He told her he was not asking her to guide him tonight. He was asking for a trade. He would bring her the ledger pages Severance kept on the coastal hatchery, the ones that named the buyers of the moved egg. In return, she would help him reach the vault when she could stand. Lyra lowered the shovel. She said the fox stayed, whatever they did. Noel agreed. She stepped aside and let him in, and closed the door against the wind. On the table between them she set an open notebook in her grandmother's handwriting, and turned it so he could read.
