Chapter 2

Noel left Lyra's cabin near dawn with the notebook copied into his own pocket ledger and the map folded small. He walked the ridge trail toward the road where he had hidden his truck. Half a mile in, he heard a branch snap behind him and stopped. He turned and saw nothing. He kept walking, faster. The next snap came closer, and then a low chuff, wet and heavy. He smelled something like hot copper. He had worked the lab long enough to know that smell. A specimen had picked up his scent on his boots or his coat, and it had followed him out of her yard. He ran. The trail bent through low pines and he ran until his lungs burned, then he doubled back on his own tracks to break the line. It did not work. When he crouched behind a fallen trunk, he saw it come through the trees. Green fur striped with dark bands, blue markings glowing along its ribs, antenna twitching above one torn ear. It moved on three good legs. Stitches ran down its shoulder. He recognized the tag color from the vault logs. It was not supposed to be outside the fence. He had no weapon that would matter. He turned and ran back the way he had come, toward the only door he knew would open. Lyra met him on the porch with the shovel again and the teal fox pressed against her leg, fronds raised and shivering. Noel gasped out what was behind him. She did not argue. She shoved him inside, told him to sit on the floor and not move, and stepped down into the yard. The green creature broke the tree line and stopped, head low, teeth showing. Lyra set the shovel down. She knelt. She spoke to it the way she had spoken to the fox by the stove, low and even, using words Noel did not know. The teal fox padded out past her and sat between them, dotted flanks pulsing slow. The green one snarled once. Then it lowered its head. Lyra crawled forward on her knees and touched the stitched shoulder. The creature let her. It sank onto its side in the dirt and breathed hard through its teeth. She brought it into the cabin at sunrise and laid it by the stove across from the fox. She cleaned the shoulder and did not look at Noel while she worked. When she finally spoke, her voice was flat. She said the lab would notice a second missing specimen within the day, and they would come looking along the ridge. She said the trade was still on, but the timeline had just shortened. He had until the next night to bring her the ledger pages. After that, both of them had to move, and the vault job would have to happen sooner than either of them wanted.
