Chapter 6

The torches burned low in the empty camp. Marina held the relic against her chest. Her enemies had fled into the dark, but their fear would turn to hunger. Bagh Raat stood beside her, shrunk now to his old size, his gold eyes fixed on the ridge. "They will come back with more," he said. "The stone must go where they cannot follow." He led her out of the mud and into the trees. The jungle swallowed the camp behind them. Marina moved fast, boots quiet on the roots, the relic warm in her hand. Bagh Raat flowed ahead like spilled ink. He stopped at a broken wall half-buried in vines. Old stone. Carved moons, worn smooth. She knew this place without being told. The brand on her shoulder pulled her toward it. "The ruins," Marina said. "This is part of the temple." "It is where the first guardian stood," Bagh Raat said. "Before me. Before the jungle had a name." Inside, roots had cracked the floor. A stone basin held still water. Marina set the relic in the basin. The carved moons flared, then quieted, dimming to a low glow. The stone was hidden now, cooled, safe where only the marked could reach it. She felt the pull of it settle in her chest like a second heartbeat. Against the far wall hung a cape. Black fur, spotted, long enough to brush the ground. Panther-skin, uncracked by age. Marina reached for it, then stopped. "Whose was this?" "The last who carried what you carry," Bagh Raat said. "The jungle kept it for the next." She lifted the cape. The fur was heavy and cold. She remembered her bunker burning, the soldiers at her heels, the woman she had been with her codes and her papers. That woman was ash now. She swung the cape over her shoulders. It fell into place as if cut for her. Bagh Raat came close. He lowered his great head to the cracked floor and held it there. Marina understood. He was not a beast bowing to a master. He was a guardian naming his queen. She knelt and pressed her hand to his shoulder, over the silver runes. "I accept it," she said. The runes along his back flared bright, then dimmed. He lifted his head. "The jungle has one voice now," he said. "Yours." Marina stood in the panther-skin cape, the relic glowing soft behind her. She was no longer the hunted girl from the bunker. She was the jungle's answer to the serpent cult. But she knew what the glow in the basin meant. Madame Viper would learn where the stone had gone. And a guardian could not hide forever. The crown was hers. Now she had to hold it.
