Chapter 7

The relic cooled in the basin behind her, hidden where no enemy could reach. Marina stood in the panther-skin cape and looked at the broken temple. The walls were half-swallowed by vines. The floor was cracked by roots. She had held the crown for one night. Now she had to build a home around it, or the serpent cult would take the jungle piece by piece while she slept in the mud. "You cannot guard a place you do not live in," Bagh Raat said. He paced the cracked floor, his gold eyes tracking the shadows. "The old guardian kept the temple warm. Fires. Food. A bed. The jungle trusts what it sees cared for." Marina knelt and pulled a vine loose from the wall. "Then we make it ours." She worked through the night. She cleared the rubble from the main chamber. She dragged fallen branches into a frame against the far wall. She lit a small fire near the entrance, where the smoke could escape. The temple began to breathe again. A shape moved at the broken doorway near dawn. Marina spun, dagger up. A black rat sat on the threshold, whiskers twitching. Its fur was patched gray, one ear torn. It did not run. It watched her with small bright eyes. Bagh Raat lowered his head toward the small creature. "A desert rat. From far across the sea. The jungle brings strange travelers to those it chooses." The rat crept forward and stopped at Marina's fire. It had followed the relic's call, the way she had. Marina set down a crust of bread. The rat took it in both paws. "You can stay," she said. "The temple's big enough." The rat ate and did not leave. It climbed a fallen pillar and curled into a hollow. Her first subject, she thought. A torn-eared rat from Baghdad. The queen of the jungle had an odd court. She worked three more days. She cleared a second chamber. She wove reeds into mats. She hung her whip on a hook of carved stone. The rat followed her from room to room, pulling nest scraps into corners. The temple filled with the sounds of living things. On the fourth morning, Asha Devi came up the stone steps. Marina knew her at once. Asha was the oracle who had pulled her from the burning world and told her the jungle had chosen her. Silver streaked her black hair. Her bare feet made no sound on the cracked stone. She stopped at the threshold and looked at the fire, the mats, the rat on its pillar. "You made a home," Asha said. Her amber eyes shone. "I was the last to carry this burden before the cape passed on. I kept the temple cold. I thought a guardian should not rest." She touched the warm wall. "You are wiser than I was." Marina crossed to her. "There's a room ready for you. By the west wall. If you ever need it." She had cleared that chamber first. She had swept it and laid a mat and left it empty, waiting. Asha's calm broke for a moment. The oracle who kept so many secrets had not expected to be offered a door. "I spent my life guiding others to their place," she said. "No one kept a place for me." She pressed her palm to Marina's cheek. "The jungle chose well." Bagh Raat rose and walked to the center of the chamber. The silver runes along his back glowed. "The temple is held," he said. "The guardian lives within its walls. The serpent cannot take what is rooted." He lay down beside the fire, his great head on his paws, and closed his gold eyes. For the first time, he rested. Marina stood in the doorway of her temple. The fire burned steady. The rat slept on its pillar. Asha sat on the swept mat in the room kept for her. The relic glowed low in the basin, safe under her mark. The girl who had run from a burning bunker with nothing but codes and fear was gone. She had a throne of dark stone now, and a jungle that answered to her voice, and a door open for anyone the jungle sent. She was no longer the hunted. She was the Queen of the Jungle, and her reign had begun.
