Chapter 4

The squirrel's warning still hung in the air when a shadow shifted in the high pine above them. An old owl tilted from a hollow in the watchtower trunk, eyes round and yellow. He dropped a small bundle into the dirt at Pipkin's feet. Cloth unrolled. Inside lay a sword too big for any mouse, its hilt stamped with a royal seal Pipkin knew by heart. "Your father's blade," the owl said. His voice was dry as bark. "Taken from the courier's guard. I have watched you, prince. I know whose son builds this little fire." Pipkin's chest went tight. The hedgehog's spines lifted. The fox's ears pinned back. Pipkin felt the word prince land like a stone in the middle of everything he had tried to grow. If the squirrel heard, she would run. If the fox heard, he would weigh the bounty against the cold ground. "I'm not him," Pipkin said. His voice shook, then steadied. "I'm the one who stayed when they didn't. That's all I am here." He pushed the sword back across the dirt with one paw. "Keep it. Or bury it. I don't want it." The owl studied him a long moment. Then he clicked his beak, almost approving, and lifted into the branches. Pipkin turned, sick, ready to see the fox already slipping toward the trees. Instead the fox was crouched by the embers, nose hovering over a wooden board the squirrel had carried in her pack — mushrooms, nuts, a small split fish. The fox stared at it. He swallowed hard. Then he stood up, walked away from the food, and sat down at Pipkin's shoulder. Hungry. Staying. Pipkin's eyes stung. The secret was out, and the fire had not emptied. The hedgehog leaned against his side. The squirrel, half-awake in her leaf nest, watched with narrowed gold eyes and did not run. Something had been tested, and something had held. More were still coming. But for the first time, Pipkin understood he would not meet them alone.
