Dawn came gray over the camp. The fox slept curled near the embers. The squirrel breathed soft in her leaves. Pipkin walked down to the dark river alone, needing the cold water on his paws, needing to think. The bank had crumbled in the night. Something pale stuck out of the mud. He knelt and brushed the dirt away. Stone. Cut stone, shaped by hands. A doorway, half-buried, leaning into the river's edge. Above the lintel, a worn carving bared its teeth — the same shape stamped on the old tavern signs deep in the woods. A bear's claw. A welcome mark, from a time before his time. Pipkin's breath caught. He had thought this place was empty when he found it. He had thought he was the first foolish creature to try. Inside the low doorway, sand had drifted across a flat floor. A glass bottle lay on its side, cork still tight, a curl of paper inside. Beside it rested a lute, its wood split, its strings green with age. Someone had sat here. Someone had played for company that came across the water. Pipkin lifted the bottle with shaking paws. The hedgehog had followed him down. He stood at Pipkin's shoulder, knapsack bouncing, eyes wide. "You're not the first," the hedgehog whispered. Pipkin shook his head slowly. "No. And they wanted the next one to find this. They left it on purpose." He thumbed the cork. It gave with a soft pop. The paper inside was short. Three lines, faded but readable. Pipkin read them twice. He folded the paper against his chest and looked across the dark, swirling water. Whoever had built here had failed, or left, or been driven out. But they had believed enough to leave a door open for him. Pipkin stood up. He was not the first. That meant he did not have to be the last.
