Pipkin folded the faded note into his pocket and turned back to the doorway. The sand inside was not just sand. His paw struck something hard beneath it — a second slab, set into the floor, ringed with iron. A hidden room below the first. He brushed the floor clean. An ornate lock held the lower slab shut, its brass face shaped like a small sun, fed by a chain that ran into the stone. Beyond the chain stood the shadow of an iron gate, rusted into the wall, as if the first builder had meant to keep even himself from coming back. Pipkin knelt close. The lock had a keyhole, but no key. The hedgehog crouched beside him, quills trembling. Pipkin remembered something. Up the slope, half-swallowed by ivy, stood a small carved lodge he had passed a dozen times and never entered. He had thought it was only old. Now he understood it had been a watchpost — a vault above the vault. He ran for it. Inside, on a peg behind the door, hung a brass key shaped like a sun. The key turned. The slab lifted. Down a short stair waited a chest, wrapped tight in dead, thorny vines, as if the builder had not buried treasure but a wound. Pipkin pulled the briars away. His paws bled a little. Inside lay a child's blanket, a name stitched into the corner, and a single small bone. Pipkin sat back on his heels. The first builder had not failed because the work was too hard. He had failed because he had lost someone he could not carry forward. Pipkin closed the chest gently and set a flat stone over it. He would not abandon this place. But now he knew exactly what it would cost him if he could not keep his own safe.
