Chapter 7

Pipkin set the flat stone over the chest and climbed back into the daylight. The hedgehog met him at the lodge door, quills stiff. Something was moving along the riverbank. Small prints in the mud. A trail too careful to be an animal at ease. They followed the tracks down to the dark water. A weasel crouched in the reeds, shivering, clutching a scroll stamped with a red royal seal. He held the paper out like a shield. "They say a prince hides broken things here," he whispered. "I stole this from the castle. I had nowhere else." Pipkin's chest tightened. Word had traveled. If one frightened weasel could find him, so could worse. He wanted to pull the stranger close and say yes. He also wanted to send him back across the river before the camp became a target. He thought of the bone beneath the stone slab. He thought of the empty sleeping space the hedgehog had once left behind. Pipkin walked the weasel up the slope to the old carved walls at the camp's edge. He cleared a dry spot inside the broken gate. Not the fire. Not yet. "You sleep here tonight," Pipkin said. "If you're still here at dawn, and the scroll is still in your paws, we'll talk." The weasel nodded and folded himself small against the stone. Pipkin walked back down to the water alone. The refuge had a door now, and a threshold, and a rule. He had not turned the stranger away. He had not let him in. For the first time, the place he was building behaved like something real — something that could be entered, and something that could be guarded.
