Chapter 10

Nymeria walked through fields of purple lilac. The air smelled sweet, not sour like the marsh. Her wolf ran ahead, ears up, tail loose. She had not seen the animal move so freely in all their days in Shadowfen. Ahead, a small town sat in the green meadows. Smoke rose from chimneys. A weathered building with a painted sign stood near the road. Outside it, an old woman crouched in the grass, picking berries into a basket. Nymeria's steps slowed. In the marshes, people had shut doors against her horns. She touched one purple horn, unsure. But hunger and hope pushed her on. She had no coin. No name. She needed food and a roof, and this was the first door she had seen in the new world. The old woman looked up. Her hair was honey blonde, tied back, and a flour-dusted apron covered her brown dress. Nymeria braced for the fear. It did not come. "Well now," the woman said. She rose and brushed dirt from her hands. Her eyes went to the horns, then to the wolf, then back to Nymeria's face. She smiled. "You look half-starved, child. And you've walked a long road, I can see it in your boots." "You are not afraid," Nymeria said. "Afraid of a tired girl and a hungry dog?" The woman laughed. "I'm Madam Honey. This is my inn. I take in strays. Always have." She held out the basket. "Berries first. Then bread." Nymeria took one berry. It was sweet and warm from the sun. Her throat tightened. No one in Shadowfen had offered her anything without wanting something back. She waited for the woman's eyes to glaze with the charm's pull. They did not. Madam Honey only saw a girl who needed feeding. "Come inside," Madam Honey said. She pushed open the wooden door. Warm light and the smell of baking spilled out. "The wolf too. He'll want a spot by the fire." Nymeria stepped over the threshold. The wolf followed without a sound. Inside, timber beams crossed the ceiling. A fire burned low. Madam Honey pulled out a chair and set a loaf on the table with a bowl of fresh made soup before Nymeria could speak. "Eat," she said. "You can tell me your troubles or keep them. Either way, you've got a bed tonight." Nymeria broke the bread. Her hands shook. This was kindness she had not earned or charmed. It was simply given. For the first time, she believed the new realm might hold what Shadowfen never could. She ate, and the wolf lay by the fire. Madam Honey hummed as she worked. Nymeria set down the bread and made a decision. She would not run again. She would stay, learn the book, and build a life here. The old world was closed. This warm room was open.
