Chapter 11

Nymeria woke in a small attic room. She did not remember climbing the stairs or falling into the bed. The last thing she recalled was the bread and the warm fire. Morning light came through a narrow window. Below her, she heard voices, chairs scraping, and the clatter of bowls. The inn had come alive with guests. She rose and crept down the stairs. The main room was full. Travelers crowded the tables, hungry for breakfast. The smell of fresh bread filled the air. Her wolf lifted his head from his spot by the fire, then settled again. Nymeria stopped on the last step, unsure. She had no coin. She had slept in the woman's bed and eaten the woman's food. She waited for the bill to come due, the way it always did. Madam Honey saw her and hurried over. Flour dusted her apron. She wiped her hands and took Nymeria's fingers in her own warm ones. "You slept like the dead, child. Good. You needed it." Her eyes went to the horns and did not flinch. "If you want to stay, I only ask one thing. Earn your keep." Nymeria braced for more. A price. A trick. In Shadowfen, no one gave without taking. But Madam Honey only pointed to the crowded room. "These folk want feeding. I've got more hands than heads this morning. Can you carry a tray?" Nymeria stared. "You want me to work." "I want you to help." The woman laughed. "That's how a home works. You give, I give. No magic in it. Just hands and bread." No magic. Nymeria's chest tightened. All her life, people served her because her charm pulled at them. She had never earned a place. She had only compelled one. Now a woman asked for plain, honest work, and offered a home in return. Nymeria took the tray. Her hands shook, then steadied. She carried bowls of oatmeal and plates of honey buns to a table of tired travelers. A man thanked her. His eyes did not glaze. He saw only a girl bringing food. She went back for more. She filled cups. She wiped a spill. The wolf watched her cross the room again and again. By midmorning the guests had gone. Nymeria set down the last tray. Her arms ached. She had never felt anything like it. She had given something and taken nothing by force. Madam Honey pressed a warm honey roll into her hand. "You've a place here as long as you want it. The attic's yours." Nymeria held the honey roll. She had earned it. Not charmed it, not stolen it. For the first time, she belonged somewhere by her own hands. If a stranger could give her a home for honest work, then perhaps love could come the same way. Freely. Without her charm. She would learn to live like this. She would learn to be wanted for herself.
