Chapter 14

Willowyn walked to the great hall with the white minx on her shoulder. The small animal balanced against her braid, its soft fur brushing her neck. She had grieved Kai in her room. Now she meant to turn that grief into work. She would ask her mother for the freedom to use her water magic where it was needed. Her hands were steady this time. The Queen sat at a long table near the windows. Servants leaned over ledgers around her. Two guards stood at the wall. Elara's silver braid hung down her back, and her crown caught the pale light. She looked up as Willowyn entered, her green eyes calm and measuring. "Daughter. I got your message. You wished to speak." Willowyn bowed her head. "Yes, Mother. I want to strike a deal." She kept her voice even. "Give me one year here. I learn my duties. I practice every task you set me. Then you allow me one year of freedom to do what I choose." The table went quiet. A servant's pen stopped moving. Elara set down the ledger and studied her daughter. "You are a child who has never crossed the walls," she said. "You would trade a year of your life for a fancy." "It is not a fancy," Willowyn said. "People thirst and fight in the far kingdoms. My magic can reach them. I filled the workers' trough. I fed them each morning from across the yard. That was real. Let me do more than fill troughs." The minx shifted on her shoulder. Elara watched the animal, then her daughter's face. Something in Willowyn's steadiness seemed to reach her. She rose and came around the table. She waved the servants back. "You have not asked me for a year before," the Queen said quietly. "You have only begged to run." She touched the moonstone circlet on Willowyn's head, then dropped her hand. "A princess who offers her duty first is not a child." Willowyn held her breath. "I accept," Elara said. "One year of study under me. Every task, done well. Then one year is yours." Her voice hardened. "But you learn here, in this hall, at my side. Not on the coast. Not with maps and strangers. You will see how a kingdom truly runs before you try to save others." Willowyn's chest tightened with the win and its price. She had her deal. She had also bound herself to her mother's table for a full year, watched and taught and held close. Freedom sat one year away, earned, but locked behind Elara's exact terms. "I accept," Willowyn said. Elara returned to her chair. "Then we begin now." She pushed a ledger across the table. "Read. Tell me which village pays too much for grain." Willowyn set the minx down and pulled the book toward her. Her freedom had a date now. So did her cage.
