Chapter 15

Two weeks passed. Willowyn kept her promise. She read ledgers, judged grain disputes, and sat at her mother's side while the people brought their troubles. Elara let her speak for the crown, guiding her with a look or a quiet word. But when Willowyn asked how to fight with water, the Queen had nothing to give. Statecraft she knew. War magic she did not. They stood on a balcony of the pale keep, vines and flowers spilling over the stone below. The white minx dozed on the rail. Willowyn cupped her hands and pulled water from a basin into a spinning ribbon. "I can water a trough," she said. "I cannot stop a blade. If I go to the far kingdoms, my magic must do more than pour." Elara watched the ribbon wobble and splash on the tiles. "Then you need a teacher I am not," she said. She did not soften it. "I ruled with words and law. Your gift runs deeper than mine. I have hired someone." "Hired?" Willowyn let the water fall. "A witch," Elara said. "She trades in spells and charms, real ones, tested in real trouble. She arrives in two days. I have paid her for a full year. She will train you while you train under me." The Queen turned from the rail. "I cannot teach you to defend a life. She can." Willowyn's heart jumped. She had never met a witch. She had only heard of them in old tales the servants whispered. "A true witch," she said. "Coming here." "Do not look so pleased," Elara said, though her mouth almost curved. "She will not coddle you. If your power stays loose and wild, you will drown a friend as easily as an enemy. That frightens me more than any far kingdom." She touched the moonstone circlet on her daughter's head, then dropped her hand. "Learn control from her. Learn people from me." Willowyn bowed. "Thank you, Mother. I will be ready." The words came steady this time, not begging, only sure. Elara left her on the balcony. Willowyn stood alone with the minx and the fallen water. For the first time, her cage and her freedom felt joined. Her mother's year had a purpose now beyond ledgers. She would not just learn how a kingdom ran. She would learn to make her gift a weapon that healed instead of harmed. She raised her hand again and drew the spilled water off the tiles. It rose in a clean, tight coil this time. She held it steady, waiting for the one who could teach her to hold it steadier. In two days, the training she truly needed would begin.
